Doctor Achebe:Some educators think that in our global, tech- oriented world, students need to focus on nonfiction texts, such as news stories, technical manuals, or other informational materials. They say that reading poetry, novels, and short stories is not the optimal use of the limited time that
students have in the classroom. How do you view this approach of education? Should schools limit the teaching of fictional texts in favor of teaching more practical, nonfiction texts?
Kelly: Education has to evolve. Nowadays, there's an enormous amount of economic and political data freely available online. It's important that students can evaluate this information to understand local and world events in order to be good citizens. Reading fiction is a wonderful hobby, but school should prepare students for adult life and its responsibilities.
Paul: I spent a lot of class time in high school analyzing literature. I'm studying to be an engineer, so I admit that reading fiction in school was not directly applicable to my future occupation, but it did instill in me a love of reading, which is very valuable. I feel better equipped now to understand all sorts of written material.
范文:
I strongly agree with Claire's perspective that dedicating significant time to teaching fictional texts, including novels and poetry, is vital for students' overall development. Fictional texts, such as literature and poetry, impart essential values and foster creativity among students. For example, by reading Shakespeare's "King Lear," students can grasp the complex relationship between ambition and ethics, recognizing that excessive ambition can lead to catastrophic consequences. Similarly, through reading renowned poets such as Wordsworth, students develop a more profound appreciation for the natural world and the concept of freedom. These essential insights and appreciation are not typically conveyed through technical manuals, economic reports, or similar non-fiction texts. However, if schools reduce the time spent on teaching literature, students may grow into adults overly focused on ambition, potentially overlooking the richness and beauty in everyday life. Therefore, it's essential for schools to invest sufficient time in literature teaching, allowing students to reap the profound benefits of engaging with fictional texts.

Doctor Achebe:This week in class we are learning about different methods of advertising and their effectiveness. One advertising strategy that companies often use is to ask celebrities, famous entertainers,or sports figures to promote their products. However, some experts believe that it is more effective to have ordinary people talk about the product. Which of these two advertising strategies do you think is better?
Kelly: I like the "ordinary people"approach. People are more interested in a product when they see people like themselves using the product.I think this is even true for clothing advertisements, which traditionally use famous models. People get a better idea of whether they like the clothes when they see all kinds of different people wearing them, and not just models.
Paul: I think the use of celebrities is really effective. The first thing an advertisement must do is to grab viewers' attention. When a famous actor or sports figure appears in your advertisement, viewers first notice the celebrity."What's this? I really like that person," they think. Then, once you have the viewers' attention, you can provide information about your product.
范文:
Similar to what Kelly explains, I also hold the view that inviting ordinary people to advertise commodities could work better since their words seem to be more reliable for the public. Generally speaking, what the celebrities have done is more likely to be their daily work, which is highly likely with fancy payment, so the public may not easily buy what they promote in the advertisements. Thus, the entire sales could vary unsteadily. For instance, once ordinary people present the general function of cellphones, we mostly will be convinced and show interest in learning more from that, which is what Apple has been doing and thus contributing to substantial quantities of sales in the global market. Compared to that, some bands tend to invite singers or actors for advertising and usually can’t have the same result since most potential consumers are quite familiar with the process of their endorsement. Consequently, one can hardly deny that is one of the core reasons for the leading position of Apple in this field.
