大家好,欢迎收听 BBC英语教学的 “你问我答” 节目。I'm Jiaying.
Beth
And I'm Beth. This week, we are answering this question:
Question
我有个问题:“noticeable、noted” 和 “notable” 有什么区别?怎么区分什么时候用 “noted”,什么时候用 “notable”?
Beth
'Noticeable' is less easily confused than 'noted' and 'notable', so we'll explain that first. 'Noticeable' is an adjective that means easy to see or recognise.
Jiaying
没错,形容词 “noticeable” 的意思是 “显而易见的,显著的”。在描述人的时候,“noticeable” 多用来形容 “一个人外表或性格上的变化是明显的”。
Beth
And it's also commonly used with the nouns 'improvement' and 'change'.
Jiaying
常与 “noticeable” 搭配使用的名词有 “improvement” 和 “change”,分别表示 “进步和变化是明显的”。来听三个使用了形容词 “noticeable” 的例句。
Examples
I cut my own hair yesterday. Is it noticeable?
(我昨天给我自己剪了头发。看着明显吗?)
Matteo has made a noticeable improvement in maths this term.
(马泰奥这学期在数学这门科目上有明显的进步。)
The change is quite noticeable. I was surprised you didn't see it.
(变化很明显。我很惊讶你没看出来。)
Jiaying
讲完了 “noticeable”,我们来对比一下 “noted” 和 “notable” 之间的区别。
Beth
'Noted' means something is known by many people, especially for a quality that is admirable.
Jiaying
“Noted” 作形容词时的意思是 “众所周知的,著名的”,尤其可以用来描述 “一个人因良好的品质或素质而声名远扬的” 或 “一样事物以高质量著称的”。我们常说 “be noted for something(因…而闻名,以…著称)”。听两个例句。
Examples
This athlete is noted for his incredible stamina in long-distance races.
(这名运动员以他在长跑中非凡的耐力而出名。)
This university is noted for its scholarship programme.
(这所大学以其奖学金项目而闻名。)
Jiaying
那么,形容词 “notable” 又该怎么用呢?
Beth
Now, 'notable' means 'deserves to be noted', so something deserves attention and to be known because it is important.
Jiaying
“Notable” 的意思是 “因在某个方面具有重要特征而值得注意的、令人瞩目的”。比如:你可能收集了大量的邮票,拥有 “a notable collection of stamps”;一栋楼可能因为有非常令人瞩目的建筑特征而被形容为 “notable”。来听两个使用了 “notable” 的例句。
Examples
My father owns a notable collection of Roman coins.
(我父亲收藏了一批珍贵的罗马钱币。)
Newton's laws of motion are notable theories in physics.
(牛顿的三大运动定律是物理学中的重要理论。)
Beth
And we can also say that something can 'be notable for something', which means it deserves attention often because it has an important or prominent feature.
Jiaying
搭配 “be notable for something” 用来表示 “因…而值得注意的,因…而令人瞩目的”。请听例句。
Example
This manor house is notable for its original period features.
(这座庄园以其独特的时代特征而令人瞩目。)
Beth
So, the biggest difference between 'noted' and 'notable' is that 'noted' means known by many and 'notable' means deserves to be known by many.
Jiaying
总结一下:形容词 “noticeable” 的意思是 “显而易见的”;“noted” 的意思是 “因优秀的品质或特征而众所周知的”,常用搭配是 “be noted for something”;“notable” 的意思是 “因为某个方面具有重要的特征而值得注意的、令人瞩目的”,但这个事物并不一定很有名。
