Describe a person you disliked at first but ended up being friends with.
You should say:
Who he/she is
How you knew him/her
Why you disliked him/her at first but changed your mind
And explain how you feel about the experience
I'd like to talk about my colleague Mike, who's now one of my closest friends, but who I really couldn't stand when I first met him about three years ago.
I met Mike when he joined our marketing team at work. He was assigned to the desk opposite mine, so we were basically facing each other all day long. From the very beginning, he struck me as incredibly arrogant and opinionated. During team meetings, he would often challenge everyone's ideas, including our manager's, which I thought was quite disrespectful. He also had this habit of interrupting people mid-sentence, which really got on my nerves.
For the first few months, I tried to keep my interactions with him to a minimum. However, things changed when we were assigned to work together on a major project. At first, I was dreading it, but as we spent more time together, I began to see a different side of him. What I had interpreted as arrogance was actually just enthusiasm and confidence in his abilities. The way he challenged ideas wasn't meant to put people down but to push for better solutions.
One evening, we had to stay late to finish a presentation, and we ended up chatting about our lives outside work. I discovered he had overcome some significant personal challenges, which had shaped his direct communication style. He was actually incredibly loyal and supportive once you got to know him.
Looking back at this experience, I feel it taught me a valuable lesson about not judging people too quickly. It's easy to make assumptions based on first impressions, but people are complex and often have reasons for behaving the way they do. Now, I make a conscious effort to give people more of a chance before forming an opinion. My friendship with Mike has been incredibly rewarding, and I'm grateful that circumstances forced us to get to know each other better. It's a reminder that some of the best relationships can come from the most unexpected beginnings.
