The planet our Earth may have 'devoured'

Did Earth devour a nearby planet called Theia?

It's part of a leading theory for how our Moon was formed.

Most astronomers think Theia and a young Earth collided about 4.5 billion years ago.

This would have released enough material to clump together into the Moon.

Prof Thorsten Kleine, Planetologist, Max Planck Institute
"That was the case during the planet formation process, you know, when the entire system was unstable."

Part of Theia might have been absorbed by the Earth.

And scientists even claim to have found some of it buried deep inside the planet.

Regardless, it seems we might owe Theia, and the Moon, a lot.

Prof Thorsten Kleine, Planetologist, Max Planck Institute
"It's very important for the climate's stability. If we would not have this, I think we would have much more extreme climate and weather conditions, which would not be good for the development of life. Understanding the Moon, or the origin of the Moon, is important for understanding why the Earth is as it is, and why it is basically a planet that can harbour life."
