When we face difficult or challenging situations at work, at a social event, or in a personal relationship, we often find ourselves stressed.

当我们面对工作中的难题、社交场合的挑战或是人际关系的纠葛时,常会感到压力倍增。

In addition to the feeling of dread, there are many bodily reactions that signal stress as well. Our heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar level rise when we feel stressed. If we are exposed to too much stress, or have a prolonged exposure to stress, we might also gain weight, have sleep disturbances, or even experience memory and concentration difficulties.

Coping with the effects of stress can be hard. But, can we actually make stress work for us?

Some experts encourage people to actively manage their stress instead of pushing it away.

一些专家鼓励人们积极管理压力,而不是一味排斥。

Dr. Golnaz Tabibnia, an assistant research professor from University of California, Irvine, suggests that proactively dealing with stress "rewires the brain to better manage future stressors". She says, "It's like being at the gym: lifting weights is stressful, but it makes us stronger."

戈尔纳兹·塔比卜尼亚博士是一位助理研究教授,任职于加州大学欧文分校,她建议积极主动地应对压力可以 “重塑大脑神经连接,从而更好地应对未来的压力源”。她说,“这就像健身:举重虽然会带来压力,但它能让我们变得更加强壮。”

There's no quick and easy trick to stress management. However, a healthy lifestyle goes a long way. For example, a balanced diet and regular exercise can build up our physical resilience toward stress. Healthy social interactions and simply showing kindness to other people releases our stress, too.

没有一种一劳永逸的压力管理方式。不过,健康的生活方式大有裨益。比如,均衡饮食和规律运动能增强身体面对压力时的韧性。健康的社交活动,哪怕只是向他人表达善意,也能帮我们释放压力。
