We are here to answer your questions about English language, culture and life. I'm Buli, and I'm with Beth who is here to help me answer this week's question.
Beth
Hi, Buli. How are you doing?
Buli
Not bad, actually. Thank you. So, let's hear the question.
Question
Hi, could you share some more expressions we can use to tell people that 'I was just kidding' or 'I'm just teasing you'? I usually say 'I was just joking', but lately I heard my British friend say 'I was just winding you up' and found that expression quite interesting itself.
Buli
Beth
Right. Ready to wind each other up, Buli? Buli? Are you listening?
Buli
No. Nah, I'm just trying to wind you up!
Beth
Well, it's working! We'll look at some different ways of saying you're teasing or joking. Let's get started.
Buli
I wanted to ask about your outfit, Beth. I had no idea traffic cones were fashionable these days.
Beth
Traffic cones?! I guess my jumper is quite orange…
Buli
Nah, I'm only messing with you. It's bright and colourful. I actually quite like it.
Beth
Oh, thank you. Speaking of colourful, I tried one of those rainbow biscuits you brought into the office this morning. I'm actually feeling a bit sick now. I might need to go home soon.
Buli
Oh no! Really? I thought they were nice…
Beth
Ha! I'm only pulling your leg. They were pretty good, actually.
Buli
Phew, you worried me there.
Beth
Sorry, I couldn't resist. Just having a bit of fun.
Buli
It's also really common to use the words 'just' and 'only' with a lot of these expressions.
Beth
Yes. You could say 'I'm only messing around' or 'I'm just messing around'. And with this expression, we can also remove the word 'around' to shorten it.
Buli
Beth
And in American English, people say 'goofing around', which means the same thing – to be joking and teasing.
Buli
类似的表达还有 “I was only playing” 和 “I was just having a laugh”。
Beth
Yes. And we can say 'I was just having a bit of fun', which means the same.
Buli
Finally, you said 'I couldn't resist'. We say this when we have a strong temptation to do or say something.
By the way, did you brush your hair this morning? Because it looks a bit…
Beth
What? Of course I did!
Buli
Ha-ha. Sorry, I couldn't resist – it looks great.
