Diabetes is a condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high.

If it's out of control, it can lead to a heart attack, kidney failure and blindness.

There are two types. Type 1 is caused by the body not producing insulin. And type 2, which is by far the most common, happens when the body becomes resistant to insulin.

Cases have risen dramatically all over the world during the past three decades.

In fact, every five seconds, one person develops diabetes.

But the rise is particularly high in low and middle income countries.

The causes are complex.

The WHO says there are genetic factors, but eating unhealthily and being inactive contribute to the development of diabetes too.

The International Diabetes Federation says urbanisation, more people living in towns and cities, often leads to these unhealthier lifestyles.

But wherever you live in the world, you can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by eating more healthily, not smoking, drinking less alcohol and staying more active.

You could also check your glucose levels with a health professional – an early diagnosis is very important to avoid complications.
