每逢春节，很多人家的门口都会贴上红色的“福”字和春联，这可谓是中华民族过农历春节的一个习俗了。

春联，又叫“春贴”、“门对”、“对联”，它以对仗工整、简洁精巧的文字描绘美好形象，抒发美好愿望，是中国特有的文学形式。

贴上春联和“福”字，意味着过春节正式拉开序幕，大大增加了欢乐喜庆的节日气氛。

那么，“春联”的由来是什么?在英语中应该怎么表达才好呢?

春联的由来

According to legends in the China's ancient past, there was a monster known as Nian who often came down from the mountains to eat livestock and locals. It was discovered that he was afraid of the color red and so red paper was placed around doors and windows of houses and poems for good luck were added to them. The houses with the red paper were avoided by the monster, so its inhabitants were spared. The tradition has continued until today.

根据中国古代历史传说记载，

有一个叫“年”的怪物经常从山上到村子里吃牲畜。

后来人们发现这个怪物怕红色，所以就在门上、窗户上贴红纸，

红纸上面还写一些增加转运的诗。

所以这个风俗被流传了下来，一直到今天。

春联的英文

春联的英文是：Spring Festival Scrolls

这里的“scroll”指的就是“卷轴;画卷”，

比如说：

Most Chinese pictures are painted on silk scrolls.

(中国画大都是画在绢卷轴上的。)

同时，它还可以表示“名册”的意思，

比如说：

be entered in the scrolls of history

(名垂史册)

那么，“上联”、“下联”、“横批”又该怎么说呢?

可不能把“上”、“下”直译成“up”和“down”哟。

事实上，我们用“the left scroll”、“the right scroll”、以及“the top scroll”来分别指这三个意思。

除去“春联”，一般性的“对联”，我们叫做“couplet”。所以，“春联”还可以叫做“Spring Festival Couplets”哟。
