Art can have a great influence on children, although on the surface many may not see the positive and enduring influences of art, and many people may believe that seemingly more practical and pragmatic subjects are more important and more influential than art. However, children respond very well to art, both contemporary art and more traditional art. Children think very visually and have lively and active imaginations. The meanings and metaphors contained in works of art, as well as the colours, shapes and feelings expressed in art, can have a very formative impact on children's mental development and impressions about the world. I am a firm believer in the importance of teaching art, and art history, to young children.

Some artwork is very expensive because they are rare, or gain fame because a painter or artist has become famous, and the market pushes their prices up. I'm not entirely sure exactly how this works, but it is generally, I think, because art is so unique and many pieces of art, especially those done by the hand of a famous artist, cannot be easily replicated or copied. In recent years, the world of modern art has opened up more and more in China, and people have started to develop collections of artwork by famous people. The more collectors appreciate certain pieces of art, the more their value increases at auctions. I think that's the reason anyway.

Some people enjoy collecting famous paintings because they are so unique, and the older they become, the more their value will increase. It's also a human instinct to collect rare items, and artwork is an exciting thing to collect, for those that have the money to build up collections, and enjoy seeing their value increase over time. I guess like anything else in life, people are drawn to things of beauty, and things of value, and the more people perceive things to be precious, the more those items will increase in value on the market. This is how market forces work!

Art can bring emotion, feeling and philosophical depth to life. Art is something, like music, that is hard to express or explain in words, but often captures feelings and beliefs that are not easily conveyed in the simple practical written or spoken language. People for millenia have been drawn to art, for it represents beauty and feeling that is beyond the practicalities and struggles of daily life. While the world is obsessed with technological advances, machines, cars, houses, and all the things that make up our daily lives, art, a bit like religion, provides a sacred space above and beyond all of those practical things – and people fundamentally need this kind of escape. I believe art has a deeper value than many of us think – and certainly throughout history, art has been extremely important in human existence.
