A skill which I think I would be able to teach other people is public speaking and debate. In university I joined a public speaking and debate society organized by one of our teachers. I bought a couple of books about public speaking, which also, at the time, included some CDs of famous speakers and their speeches – Martyn Luther King, John F. Kennedy, and so on. I became really inspired with this, and I also enjoyed the debate club. Both of these skills are quite important if you want to enter into the academic world and succeed. Often you have to construct very logical arguments based on evidence and support your opinions strongly with examples and reasoning. This is not something that comes naturally to everyone, and I think it takes practice and patience and a certain degree of knowledge and learning. I feel very enthusiastic about teaching others and I think it’s really exciting when you have a skill that you are confident about passing on to others. I also believe that in teaching, you also develop yourself too, because you learn a lot from working out the best way to structure classes, workshops and seminars, and through doing so you improve your own skills. I also believe that Chinese students have an aptitude for public speaking because we have a strong culture of performances and performing in front of others – so I think this really means that students here get really engaged when it comes to preparing speeches and trying their best when performing for the interest of an audience. I also believe that in future public speaking will become more and more important - in our global and fast-changing society, the importance of communicating ideas and beliefs across cultures, with logic and clear explanation will become greater and greater. So, I think this is not only a skill that I would be able to teach, and enjoy teaching, but also one which is important and very useful. 

I think that humour is always a good thing in the classroom, in moderation of course. A teacher who is always cracking jokes, of course, would be a bit annoying, but in the right way, at the right time, in the right place in a lesson, then it can create amusement and interest, and therefore engage and motivate students. 

Teachers should be kind but firm with students, in my view. Being too harsh will reduce motivation and cause students to become too introvert, too shy and too averse to taking risks. Students need to be encouraged to take risks in their learning and in expressing their ideas. So, a kind teacher will be better able to increase student motivation and, in turn, improve student performance. But, as I said, there needs to be a balance of qualities that a teacher possesses as well as being kind…. 

I think both are of equal importance really, but it really depends on the path in life a person chooses and their personal aptitudes and talents. Ideally, a blend of practical skills, good communication and social skills, and academic skills, is the ideal combination in life. A person that combines those skills can often be quite successful in life. For example, someone who is very academic, but lacks good communication skills, often doesn’t perform very well in their career. And likewise, if a person lacks a good, sound academic background, then they will fall behind because they do not have the logical reasoning and basis in knowledge to compete, especially in a very competitive society. 

I think that young children learn faster and are more willing to learn than older people, frankly. Children, when they hit about 4 years of age, reach a stage of quite fast developmental learning, especially in language and understanding the logic of certain basic concepts, and if we give them enough attention and focus at that age they can learn really quickly, and pick up new things a lot faster than older children or even adults. Early childhood education is an interesting field actually, and if teachers and parents make things fun and incorporate games into learning, then kids of this age can develop really fast.
