A time I remember telling a friend the truth, and finding it quite difficult, too, was when a friend in our social group had a terrible habit of letting everyone else always pay for things, and not putting his hand in his own pocket to offer to pay or even contribute. This kind of situation is usually quite awkward and embarrassing for everyone involved, as nobody wants to seem like they are moaning about money or being mean. But after so many times of this one friend doing this, my friends and I decided it was about time to be up front with him, direct, and address the issue head on. Because I had the closest relationship with this friend, and I am a fairly diplomatic communicator, everyone agreed that it should be me to break this to him, to tell him. So, one evening when we were walking together, I tentatively opened up the topic, and then told him that this habit of his was starting to put us all off and make us feel bad and uncomfortable. At first he was really defensive about it, but after a while he admitted that he sort of had a problem when it came to money and that his parents were very controlling about how much he spent when he went out. It was good that I was direct and talked to him about this, because it brought about mutual understanding and I realized that he wasn’t intentionally being mean or taking advantage of us, but he was under a sort of internal pressure from his family that caused him to act like this when he went out with us. Anyway, I felt good about the way I told him the truth – directly but diplomatically – and I felt we all learned a bit from this experience. 

I think there is a time and a place for telling the truth and being direct or indirect or simply not saying anything. Some truths are important to tell, others are important to simply keep quiet about. An intelligent person with a good social awareness, should know which kinds of things it is important to be direct about and which things to avoid addressing. Being a mature adult involves gauging social situations relative to their context, and when it comes to telling people the truth and being honest, it’s especially important to decide the course of action based on the context. 

Well, you don’t always know! Sometimes you know because the lie is so obvious and you are well aware that they are telling lies. At other times you simply don’t know, either because the person is a very good liar, and also good at covering their tracks, or because you are perhaps too well-meaning and naïve! So, like a lot of things, it really depends on the individual situation, your relationship with the person, and how much background knowledge you have about what they may or may not be telling the truth about. 

People tell lies to hide things from people they do not want other people to know. It’s as simple as that. And sometimes there is justification for lying and sometimes lies are devious and calculating and selfish. It really depends. Some people are also brought up with less of a moral compass and sense of conscience, and they will often lie to suit their own ends, and do not care about whether it is wrong or not to trick or fool others. Other people lie, most of us, in the sense that they tell ‘white lies’. White lies are more normal, and we all tell white lies from time to time to protect ourselves or to protect other people’s feelings.
