Children have some wonderful and wild ideas about the things they’d like to do in the future. Well, some, anyway. I had friends who wanted to be astronauts, top business men, technology experts and entrepreneurs like Jack Ma. All sorts. There are, however, other kids who are more down to earth and realistic, maybe, and others that just simply want a fairly easy and low-pressure job, partly because they realise that being ambitious usually means taking on big challenges in one’s career. 

Oh a whole range of things. Many guys like to get into programming. Actually, girls, too. I know a lot of girls and guys who really like IT. Design, computer graphic design seems to be quite popular. The field of business is something that some people are very attracted to, because they have this idea that if they can make big business, through online buying or being a consultant for a successful company, they can get rich and have a very comfortable and exciting life. There’s a whole range of different professions that are popular in my country today, and I think quite a few opportunities if you know the right people and are prepared to work hard. 

I think as we go through life we go through all sorts of changes based on our experiences as well as the people we meet and the things we see in the media….also, depending on the advice we get and the changing trends of the market in our country. When we are younger, most of us tend to be less realistic and perhaps entertain more ambitious ideas, and as we get older, we realise that high ambitions usually involve a lot of work and luck, so we end up becoming a bit more down-to-earth as we get older, especially when we are starting to think about starting a family. 

In my view, it's a balancing act between financial viability and personal fulfillment. Primarily, people must consider the remuneration package to ensure it meets their cost of living and financial goals. However, beyond just the paycheck, the prospects for career progression and the company culture are equally vital. If a job pays well but offers a toxic environment or zero growth, it often leads to burnout rather quickly. So, a wise decision involves weighing the salary against the potential for long-term job satisfaction and work-life balance.

It is certainly a dominant factor, especially given the rising cost of living, but I wouldn't say it is the sole determinant for everyone. For fresh graduates or those with heavy financial burdens, salary is often the priority. That being said, once a person's basic needs are met, other factors often take precedence, such as flexible working hours, a sense of purpose, or a supportive boss. We are seeing a trend, especially with the younger generation, where they value autonomy and mental health just as much as, if not more than, a high income. So, salary attracts talent, but other factors are needed to retain it.
