I’d like to talk about a school uniform, well, a type of school uniform which is popular in Chinese schools. I’ve not really seen this kind of uniform in western schools, actually. It’s a track suit. Like a baggy, fashionable sort of track suit, often dark blue and white. I actually like this uniform and I think it’s pretty practical for both girls and boys and students of all ages. I wore this kind of uniform in middle school and high school. My parents bought it for me. I liked it to be honest. In fact, I think uniforms are a good thing in schools because it makes everyone a bit more equal. Children can be petty and competitive about things like fashion and image, and I think that the school uniform breaks down these barriers. Also, it’s easier for everyone in the family, if you wear the same thing every day rather than having to worry about different clothes to wear each day. So, for a variety of reasons I think school uniforms are good. Also, it gives young people a sense of community and identity, which is quite good for creating a unity, a common purpose and the feeling of being part of something – a team, in a way, really. For all of these reasons I think I felt good wearing my school uniform and I think the track suit is a really good type of uniform for students.

Wearing a school uniform gives students a sense of common purpose, common identity and a sort of unity – a feeling of belonging to something, like a big team. I think this is really good for children, actually. However, I don’t think older students, like in university, should be made to wear a uniform.

Some students may dislike wearing school uniforms because they feel it restricts their individuality and self-expression. The uniformity may hinder their ability to showcase their unique style. Young people tend to be quite sensitive about what they wear and they also like to fall in to the same fashion trends as their colleagues and peers, so school uniforms may remove the opportunity for them to do this, as well as removing opportunities for them to express their individual personalities.

There are quite a few professions, actually. Policemen, military personnel, hotel workers, very formal professions like this. Where it’s important that an employee look identifiable to the general public. For example, if you went into a hotel reception or a restaurant, then you wouldn’t know who to ask for assistance if everyone was wearing normal clothes and not a uniform.

Wearing uniforms at work and school can foster a sense of unity and equality, as everyone appears the same. However, it may stifle creativity and personal expression. The advantages include promoting discipline and a sense of belonging, while the disadvantages involve potential restrictions on freedom and individual creativity.
