A water sport that I would really like to try is jet-skiing. I've seen it on TV and I've seen people do it in Hainan at sea, but I've never had the chance to do it myself. A jet-ski is a kind of a motorized machine that you sit on – it has a seat, and handlebars like a bike, I suppose, and instead of a front wheel it has two skis. The motor is located at the back. When you sit on the jet-ski, and get it started, you basically move quickly across the water, as if you're in a speedboat, really, and steer the jet-ski, making it go faster by turning the handle on the handlebars, very much like you would on a motorbike. It looks really really fun, and people say it's not so hard. At least it seems easier than surfboarding, and it's really fast too, or can be when you feel confident enough to go at speed. I've seen a lot of people doing it, and it looks so cool how the jet-ski can shoot across the waves even when the sea isn't very calm. Often you wear a wet-suit or a swimming costume because it's inevitable that you fall off, at least the first few times you try. I believe that when you hire a jet-ski, you also get an hour of instruction from a qualified trainer too, so you do learn the basics of how to get it going, how to steer, and what to do when you fall off, and how to get started again. I can't imagine it's too hard to get to grips with because I've seen quite a few young people and even kids of about 12 years old, doing it. I hope to do it this summer if we go to Hainan on holiday – I'm planning a trip there with a bunch of friends, you see. 

Transport.. well… that's rather different to water sports. Transport is a necessary thing on water if you live somewhere where there are islands, I suppose. For example, I had a friend who lived on Lama island outside Hong Kong, and you have to take a boat, a ferry, actually, from Hong Kong to the island. There are a few islands around there like that. A disadvantage of water transport is that it's quite slow, a lot slower than travelling by air or road, at least most of the time. Although, if you live on an island you don't have much choice! 

The most popular water sports are probably the simple ones that people do on holiday – snorkeling, diving, jet-skiing, and of course, swimming. Some people get involved in sailing clubs and things like this, but mainly people who live near the sea and who have a lot of time and money – sailing is seemingly a really cool and interesting hobby, but something that takes time, and energy and a certain level of expertise. So, I think the main types of water sports that most of us are familiar with are the more everyday fun things you get to do when on vacation. I'm not sure what water sports are really amazingly popular in China – to be quite honest it's not something I know an awful lot about, because most of my friends live in-land, and when we go on holiday to the seaside we usually just play on the sandy beaches and sunbathe and stuff like this, maybe do a bit of snorkeling. 

I most certainly do. I think it's important that children learn to swim, not just because it can be a life-saver if they ever fall in water, but because it's great exercise for the mind and the body. Also, I have to say, kids usually find water really exciting, and love playing in swimming pools, and, of course, if they can swim it means they are a lot safer and get the most out of these activities without the parents worrying about them being in danger. So, yes, for a few reasons I think that it's good that children learn to swim. 

There are some people who learn to dive and go diving, but not many. Serious divers learn to dive and get a special open water certificate. I think that's what it's called. You know, proper diving with the aqualung oxygen tank apparatus on their back that enables them to breathe underwater. I heard that in Beijing you can actually learn in the Beijing aquarium, in the main huge tank – that sounds really cool actually. Then after you get your first certificate you are qualified to go diving in open water at sea, with an instructor, of course. I know there's quite a few safety rules surrounding diving. So, it's not hugely popular with the majority of people but there are niche groups of enthusiasts that do it and take it very seriously.
