Live sports contests are far more exciting than sports contests on TV. Mainly because you’re part of a live audience, and you can see the game right in front of you, not just on a screen. Some people are really into this atmosphere and the sense of unity with the crowd that you’re with and the team you are supporting. It’s a very fundamental human desire – to be part of something big and exciting and feel part of the action. So, in many ways I see it as a very natural thing, well, for people who like noise and excitement and crowds, that is. 

Chinese people like a whole variety of different sports contests. The most popular has always been basketball. I’m not sure why, but basketball has a huge following in China and girls as well as boys are hugely into the game, and usually follow a team, know all the rules and even play themselves with friends and colleagues in their free time. 

A certain degree of competition in school is very good for children I would say. Competition can help to motivate children and also prepare them for society, which can be highly competitive. However, if the competition is too intense in schools, it can also be demotivating for students. There should be a careful balance between fostering competition amongst young people and not allowing that competition to become too dominant or too aggressive. Healthy competition is great, but very very intense competition can be damaging, especially to children who may be slower or have learning difficulties. A good teacher and parent should be able to know when and how to encourage competition for the betterment of a whole class.
