Men usually like to talk about sports and intellectual stuff… ideas about life, politics, society and perhaps sometimes cool things that happened in history. I guess it depends on the types of men, but at least the men that I know. Men sometimes are not so good at discussing emotions, and tend to compete with each other over macho issues or who is more knowledgeable.

Face-to-face communication is better for chatting, relaxing, bonding with friends and family and really getting to know a person and exchanging ideas and opinions about life. Phone calls should mainly be reserved for practical issues and arrangements or keeping in touch with family over long distances – like when you’re studying overseas – you need to hear your mother and father’s voice at least once a week, messages or emails just aren’t good enough. But face to face is definitely the best means of communicating about serious issues especially with friends and family.

Young people talk about all sorts of things. It totally depends on the kind of young people we’re talking about, their social backgrounds, their educational backgrounds, their personalities and their family backgrounds – even the place they come from. If you come from a small town you find people talk more about local gossip and small circles of family friends; if you come from a big city you are perhaps more likely to have been exposed to more international ways of thinking and you might talk about wider issues beyond just very local gossip. So, it really depends. 

In most industries a level of communication is essential. However, jobs that require more advanced levels of communication might be those related to law, education, diplomacy and international relations… and perhaps to some extent HR and marketing… Jobs that consist of working a lot with a range of different people and negotiating sometimes subtle and complex issues.
