Festivals are really important, because not only are they times when people can relax, spend time with family and forget about work, but they are also symbols of our cultural heritage. It’s important to keep traditions alive and festivals and the kinds of things people do at festivals are a great way to do this. Some people might also argue that festivals preserve national unity and should have a patriotic dimension too. 

In some cases yes, in other cases, no. But, talking about the instances where I think the significance has been lost or partially lost, I do think that festivals in my country are a bit bland compared to in ancient times or even a couple of decades ago. For example there used to be lots of activities in streets, dragon dances, parades, performances and fairs and markets on some traditional festivals in my country. But now you don’t see them much, or at least they’re not as common as they used to be. People tend to now just have meals with the family, watch a TV show, and chat… I think that’s a little bit boring and unimaginative really. So, yes, I think some traditions have been lost and that’s a shame. 

I don’t really think so to be honest. I think already in the past 20 years quite a few “new” festivals have been introduced into my country, like the western Valentines Day or Christmas as two examples. People like these festivals, but to be honest, they’re mainly commercial occasions – I think they are largely adopted by large companies to massively boost online shopping sales and things like this. I don’t really think people have any real deep relationship with these fesitvals on a meaningful level. 

I’m not totally sure really… let me think… the media promote and advertise a lot of things around or before festivals in order to make money from the sales of food and wine and things like this. I think that’s the main thing really. There are also festival-related TV shows of a cultural nature too – featuring songs, skits, performances… things like this. 

I neither think it’s good or bad. It totally depends on how much time you have, what you feel like doing and what your family tradition is really. I, personally, find it a bit boring, to be honest, but lots of people love the spirit of sitting around watching a show on TV at festival time, sharing food, like snacks and wine, and laughter and conversation. It’s always the company that makes a festival special, and the sentimental feeling at the time, not necessarily exactly what you do – whether you go out or stay at home and watch a TV or a TV show centred around the festival, or not. It’s really the company, the people you are with that makes a festival special. 


Globalisation has both good and bad sides, as we all know. From the perspective of how it influences festivals, basically more people are aware of other people’s festivals and traditions and this is a good thing really – it promotes cultural understanding between countries and also makes life more interesting. There’s also a bit of a downside too – other cultures might not understand the real “feeling” of someone else’s festival and take it on a rather superficial or purely commercial level.
