Neighbours can keep an eye out for any strangers or people with ill intentions hanging out in the area. They can also help with more positive daily tasks - like making sure the building is clean, and there isn’t rubbish all over the place, and reporting any issues to the management of the community. I’m talking now about more communal things that neighbours can do to help each other and the area. Of course, when neighbours get to know each other better they might help each other with shopping or looking after the kids - but that tends to happen in smaller towns and not so much in modern cities anymore. 

Today, in cities, people don’t know their neighbours very well for the most part. They don’t mix. Often, we don’t even know who our neighbours are unless we pass them on the stairs or in the elevator. However, in towns and villages then people know their neighbours really well - in fact, everyone knows everyone really well, and there is a greater sense of community. 

I think it’s an important part of society that we have lost in the past few decades of development in my country. As cities have grown and modernised people have become distant from those around them. I think it’s an important aspect of a more traditional life that we have lost. So, I think it’s important, but sadly, I think it is something that is not regarded by most people as that important these days. 

Most definitely medical facilities and schools - if you can call these facilities. I’d say that these are the foundations of a good society - health and education. Of course, secondary to this, there should be shops, selling important necessary products for daily living, police and security facilities, and ideally parks and gardens. For people to be content and motivated and loyal to their society there needs to be the basic facilities as well as additional features that make the area pleasant enough to live in. 

Shopping in local shops can be a more personal experience, in general. A lot of people enjoy the feeling of buying from someone they know, and have a connection with the local community. Shopping in huge supermarkets, however, tends to be cheaper and more convenient, especially if you have a car to load all the purchases into. So, this is why we are currently seeing an increase in large supermarket shopping in favour of smaller local stores. 

No, I do not think there should be a rule for this, exactly. But, in most cities you have to choose a school in your general area and apply for a place - so that all children in a city get to have a decent education.  It’s also, obviously, more convenient for families if the school is very near to their home. So, generally I can understand why there needs to be government rules about ‘catchment areas’, although I think that people should have some degree of choice if they find a particularly good school that suits their child, which isn’t in their immediate area.
