HAZEL: Does it matter what type of story I write about?

TOM: No - national or international politics, the arts ...

汤姆：不重要，国内国际政治，艺术……

Anything, as long as it’s covered in two or three newspapers.

什么都行，只要在两三份报纸上报道过就行。

Though of course it’ll be easier and more fun if it’s something you’re interested in and know something about.

当然了，如果写你自己感兴趣或者特别了解的某些话题做起来会更容易也更有趣。

HAZEL: And on that basis a national news item would be worth analysing - I’m quite keen on politics, so I’ll try and find a suitable topic.

黑兹尔：这么说的话，一个国内的新闻报道应该值得分析。我很关心政治，所以我会尝试找到合适的话题。

What did you choose for your analysis, Tom?

汤姆，你是怎么选择你的分析内容的？

TOM: I was interested in how newspapers express their opinions explicitly, so I wanted to compare editorials in different papers, but when I started looking, I couldn’t find two on the same topic that I felt like analysing.

汤姆：我对报纸如何明确表达观点很感兴趣，所以当时我想比较不同报纸的社论。但是，在我开始研究的时候，我找不到两篇我想分析的、讲述相同话题的报道。

HAZEL: In that case, I won’t even bother to look.

黑兹尔：那种情况下，我就不会去看了。

TOM: So in the end I chose a human interest story - a terribly emotional story about a young girl who was very ill, and lots of other people - mostly strangers - raised money so she could go abroad for treatment.

汤姆：所以最后我选择了人们都感兴趣的话题，是一个特别引发人们情感的故事：一个小女孩生病了，很多人，大多数是陌生人给她捐款筹钱，所以她能够去国外接受治疗。

Actually, I was surprised - some papers just wrote about how wonderful everyone was, but others considered the broader picture, like why treatment wasn’t available here.

实际上，我特别吃惊。因为一些报纸只说了大家是有多善良，但是其它的报纸从更高的角度考虑，比如讨论为什么在我们国家无法治疗。

HAZEL: Hmm, I usually find stories like that raise quite strong feelings in me! I’ll avoid that.

黑兹尔：嗯，我经常发现这样的故事会让我很激动。我会避开这一类。

Perhaps I’ll choose an arts topic, like different reviews of a film, or something about funding for the arts - I’ll think about that.

也许我会选择艺术，比如一部电影的不同评论。或者关于艺术基金的。我会好好考虑。

TOM: Yes, that might be interesting.

汤姆：好的，应该会很有趣的。
