WRITING TASK 2
Historical objects in museums all over the world should be returned to its origin country. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
I tend to agree
In conclusion (结论).
The debate over whether historical objects in museums worldwide should be returned to their country of origin is a contentious issue. I tend to agree with the argument that these objects should be returned. However, there are also valid reasons for some items to remain in foreign museums. This essay will discuss both perspectives before concluding with my view.
One of the strongest arguments for returning historical objects is the cultural and historical sense of belonging they provide to their origin countries. These artifacts are significant components of a nation's cultural heritage and history. By returning them, the local population can better inherit their cultural roots, fostering a deeper identity and national pride. This connection between the people and their cultural history is essential for the preservation of their heritage and pride in their past.
Furthermore, returning these objects promotes the integrity and understanding of their original historical and cultural background. When artifacts are displayed in their country of origin, they can be exhibited within the context of their native history, customs, and social framework. This allows for a more comprehensive and accurate interpretation of their meaning and value, which might be lost if the artifacts remain in a foreign context.
Another reason for returning historical objects is to show respect for the sovereignty of the origin country and restore justice. Many of these items were illegally plundered or taken through unjust means, often during periods of colonialism or conflict. Returning them symbolizes an acknowledgment of past wrongs and a move toward correcting these historical injustices.
However, there are arguments for keeping certain objects in foreign museums. One significant reason is that international museums promote global cultural exchange. Having artifacts from various countries on display around the world helps foster understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures. This contact with different cultural heritages can lead to greater mutual respect and understanding among nations. Moreover, some countries may have better facilities and resources to preserve historical objects. Many international museums possess more advanced technology and conditions for maintaining and restoring delicate artifacts. If an object’s country of origin lacks these preservation conditions, returning the item might lead to its deterioration, thereby causing irreversible damage to human history.
Lastly, returning artifacts might involve complex legal and ownership issues. Over time, these objects have passed through various hands, and their legal ownership may have become murky. In some cases, direct return could lead to legal disputes, making the process difficult and time-consuming.
In conclusion, I believe that decisions regarding the return of historical objects should be based on a comprehensive analysis of the artifact’s origin, current situation, and the preservation abilities of the original country. All efforts need to ensure the best outcome for both the origin country and the broader global community.
