One of the most transformative moments in my life occurred during my freshman year of college. It was a crisp autumn day, and I was walking across the campus when I stumbled upon a flyer for a study abroad program in Japan. Intrigued by the idea of exploring a new culture and broadening my horizons, I decided to apply. 

Several months later, I found myself on a plane to Japan, about to embark on a life-changing adventure. Over the next year, I immersed myself in Japanese culture, learned the language, and formed deep connections with both locals and fellow international students. I experienced the beauty of cherry blossom season, explored historic temples, and tasted a variety of delicious Japanese cuisine. I found it really fascinating that the roots of a lot of Japanese art and culture are actually from China, itself, historically, and it’s interesting to see how these have evolved in so many different ways. 

This experience changed my life in profound ways. It expanded my worldview, fostering a deep appreciation for cultural diversity, and my own Chinese roots, and a more profound understanding of global issues. I gained valuable insights into communication, adaptability, and resilience. Moreover, I developed a passion for cross-cultural exchange, which has since guided my academic and career choices. 

Studying abroad in Japan not only enriched my personal growth but also opened up new opportunities. It influenced my decision to pursue a career in international relations and allowed me to work on projects that promote intercultural understanding. Emm, and overall, this experience had a lasting positive impact on my life, shaping my values, interests, and aspirations in a meaningful way.
