A traditional celebration that I really enjoy in my country is Lantern Festival. Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the Chinese lunar new year. It is celebrated nationwide, and in one way or another in other Asian countries. The festival dates back to the Han dynasty where Buddhist monks would hang lanterns outside the temples and homes symbolizing peace, reconciliation and forgiveness, but I’m not sure if everyone remembers these virtuous roots today – but we still have a wonderful feeling during the festival, anyway. In more traditional places, especially in the south of China, you can see houses and buildings and some streets all adorned with different coloured lanterns. It’s an amazing sight. And in some countryside places, when lantern festival comes there are all sorts of activities during the day and at night you can see the lanterns stretched right into the countryside in the nighttime – people turn off the lights of their houses and just have the lanterns on so they can see the lights from all the villages around the area. On Lantern Festival people typically eat a dish called Yuanxiao or Tangyuan, which are sweet rice balls filled with dates or nuts or fruits, in a sweet sticky sort of sauce or juice. Today, in cities, it may not be so common to adorn your home with lanterns, but most people eat tangyuan, and there are almost always one or two parks where there are beautiful displays of coloured lanterns. As the years go by I’ve seen the lantern displays get increasingly artistic and interesting too. So, I enjoy going to see those. I enjoy the festival very much, and I take great delight in trying to relive the old traditions, as well. I kind of wish more young people would appreciate and help keep some of these old customs alive – not just eating the food at festivals, or drinking wine, but actually indulging in some of the old cultural customs like decorating the home, and things like this.
