A traditional festival in my country that I’d like to talk about is Qingming festival or Tomb Sweeping Day. It’s not as big as Spring Festival or Mid-Autumn festival, at all, but it’s still quite interesting if you look at its history, especially. Qingming is the first day of the solar term of the Chinese year according to the traditional calendar. The holiday is basically a reverence to the ancestors in our families who have passed away in the past, over the generations. It’s a festival that dates back well over 2000 years, and today it is a national holiday for the whole country. Traditionally, on this day, people visit the tombs of their ancestors (or family members) and ensure that the tombs are cleaned and swept properly – today people might not actually visit the tombs but they do hold certain little rituals like burning paper money in the streets outside their homes, and hanging up decorations and eating certain local foods or snacks at home with their families. People who follow local traditions very closely might also do other activities associated with ancestor reverence, especially in the south of China where people tend to be more superstitious and follow traditions more closely, or at least more ritualistically. So, there are variations depending on the town, city or region, or individual family tradition, too. But, like most festivals in China and in the rest of the world, the main thing is that people have a day off work, eat typical meals in the home with family, drink wine and get together for a relaxed family celebration. I, personally, am a great believer in maintaining traditional cultures and customs so I feel that following these festivals is important and something that young people should not ignore or forget about. So, I feel good on these occasions and enjoy the spirit of these kinds of festivals and national holidays.
