The table and doughnut charts illustrate how many domestic and international students undertook research courses in tertiary institutions in Australia in 2001 and 2010. Overall, the total number of research students in Australia increased significantly; the percentage of overseas male students was higher than that of females during the period, while the proportion of local male students overtook that of females in 2010. 

Starting with the table, the total number of research students, regardless of their nationality, was 38,849 in 2001 and this figure consisted of 33,657 local students and merely 5,192 international students. By 2010, the number had risen to 54,081 with 39,488 domestic students. Noticeably, overseas students experienced a nearly threefold increase to 14,593. 

Turning to the charts, the percentage of local students declined considerably from 87% to 73% and correspondingly, that of international students increased by 14% from 13% to 27%. In 2001, the proportion of international males and females was 9% and 4% respectively. The figures for locals were similar, at just under 45%. In 2010, there were still more male (15%) than female (12%) students from other counties, but domestic male students accounted for 39%, 5% more than their female counterparts, at 34%.
