Despite educators' willingness to better themselves, they are not necessarily happy with all forms of feedback. In particular, they often have mixed feelings about having their students evaluate them. Is this concern justified?

Some people believe that learners are not the best candidates for giving constructive criticism, and I can understand their point of view. The primary reason, according to some educators, is that when teenagers are aware of their ability to influence their teacher and the change in power dynamics, they are likely tempted to challenge the preset classroom rules, in effect undermining the authority of the teacher in change. Another concern is some students, especially those who regard disciplinary actions or low grades they have previously received as unfair, are said to make use of this opportunity to vent on a personal level. However, these claims are unjustified, as they assume that students work against the best intentions of educators, which is simply not the case for most high schoolers.

Others, however, argue that student feedback is essential for continuous professional development, a position that I can readily side with. The main reason lies in that students, the primary audience of teaching, command the most intimate knowledge of day-to-day experience under the guidance of a teacher. Their feedback is therefore less likely to be skewed compared with reports produced by directors of studies who only sit in on a class or two over a semester. Being asked to provide feedback on a regular basis is also good for students, because it helps them feel more fully engaged in their education. Those who feel their opinion matters are far more likely to have a personal stake in the educational process, so their learning outcomes are unsurprisingly better than those of under-appreciated students.

In conclusion, although teachers may hesitate to grant their students the power to evaluate their teaching, doing so can offer excellent insights into the effectiveness of their work. When this is done regularly, the quality of the educational experience is sure to improve for both the teacher and the students.
