Appalling

释义:shocking and very bad

例句:Prisoners were kept in the most appalling conditions.

Adolescent

释义:a young person who is developing into an adult

例句:Adolescents undergo many physical and emotional changes, which can be confusing for both the teenagers and their parents.

Attainable

释义:possible to achieve

例句:Dieters who set attainable weight loss goals are much more likely to keep going and lose the weight.

Accelerate

释义:to happen faster or earlier

例句:Environment factors can accelerate the development of certain cancers.

Albeit

释义:formal for "although" used to add information inside a sentence

例句:Throughout this year retail sales have shown a rise, albeit a declining one, on levels of a year ago.

Attain

释义:to succeed in getting something, usually after a lot of effort

例句:Top companies only consider applicants who have attained a high level of academic achievement.

Attribute

释义:to say or believe that something is the result of a particular thing

例句:Scientists attribute this change to better living standards, particularly in regard to diet.

Breakthrough

释义:an important development

例句:Scientists are hoping for a breakthrough in the search for a cure for cancer.

Commence

释义:to begin

例句:These habits will give the children a great preparation before commencing school.

Commodity

释义:something that is useful or has a useful quality

Consecutive

释义:following one after another in a continuous series

Constitute

释义:to be considered to be something; to be the parts that together form something

Correlate

释义:if two things correlate, they are closely connected and affect or depend on each other

例句:A high- fat diet correlates with a greater risk of heart disease.

Cumulative

释义:increasing by one addition after another

例句:It is not just a single incident but cumulative sun exposure that causes skin cancer.

Deprive

释义:to prevent somebody from having something important

例句:Some parents deprive themselves of many pleasure so that their children can have the best of everything.

Deteriorate

释义:to become worse

例句:Living conditions have deteriorated in the past few years.

Devise

释义:to invent a plan, system, object

例句:We should devise a means of transport that does not pollute the atmosphere.

Exaggerate

释义:to make something seem larger than it really is

例句:The media exaggerate the risks and benefits of research findings.

Exacerbate

释义:to make something that is already bad even worse

例句:Rising energy costs, which are a result of a growing scarcity, as well as inflation, are exacerbating the situation.

Exert

释义:to use authority, power, influence, etc. in order to make something happen

例句:In order to be successful one would have to exert himself.

Expenditure

释义:the act of spending or using money

例句:Government expenditure on primary education should be increased.

Facilitate

释义:to make something possible or easier

例句:Computers can be used to facilitate language learning.

Immense

释义:extremely large or great

例句:Regular visits from a social worker can be of immense value to old people living alone.

Imminent

释义:likely to happen very soon

例句:That is why the imminent decisions are so vital.

Incur

释义:to experience something, usually something unpleasant, as a result of actions you have taken

例句:Companies incur additional costs in dealing with non-paying customers.

Misconception

释义:a belief or an idea that is not based on correct information, or that is not understood by people

例句:A popular misconception is that immigration is bad for the economy.
