  Texting

  1. Do you like texting?

I’m not sure if I like it or not. It’s just a normal, everyday part of my life really. I do enjoy chatting with friends on texts sometimes, and on occasions we get into conversations about things, but most of the time texting for me is simply practical – arranging meetings, or arranging to go out with friends or communicating key information about things to family or workmates. That’s what texting usually is for me. But at times I enjoy a little chat with friends when I’m in bed at night or so, about life, about my day, about other people I know.

  2. Have you ever received a message which is difficult to understand?

Yes, of course, I often receive messages that are a bit hard to understand, actually. Usually they are promotional messages from companies, and I ignore them. On other occasions I might get messages from a friend who abbreviates his texts a lot, uses a lot of internet online slang and emoticons and things like this – these confuse me as I’m not really ‘in the know’ about a lot of this modern texting slang and abbreviated terms.

  3. In what circumstances do you think making a phone call to someone is better than sending a text message?

I think that sometimes a phone call can reduce confusion because you can directly speak to the person and they hear your word and sentence stress and intonation, and so they can pick up on your mood a lot more. This kind of thing is better when you’ve got an important, and perhaps more emotional issue to discuss. It helps to avoid the misunderstandings caused sometimes by the written word.
