  01

  Pen or pencil

(1)When was the last time that you bought a pen or pencil?

Oh, let me think… Actually, I remember quite clearly. It was towards the end of last summer. I wanted to do some sketching, you know, some drawing. It was a really nice summer and I had been watching this animation where a young girl sits out in the countryside and draws pictures of nature – landscape drawing, really. So I decided I would do something similar. I went to the art shops near to the art museum and bought a set of pencils. A really nice set, actually, and some special paper.

  加分词汇:sketching 素描 ;animation 动画片;a set of pencils 一套铅笔;

(2)Do you usually use a pen or pencil?

I usually use a pen, because I am a student and most of the time I make notes in lectures with a pen and paper. Of course, at home I do all my assignments on a computer, so most of the time I only use a pen for making notes. I still enjoy making notes with a pen and paper and I think it’s an important part of the brainstorm process too. I recommend to anyone studying that before they actually start writing an essay, it’s a good idea to get a pen and a sheet of paper and make a mind map to generate and categorise ideas.

  加分词汇:make a mind map 制作思维导图

  02

  Science

(1)Did you learn science in primary school?

Yes, we all have science lessons in China, in primary school. We learn the basics of how the planet earth works, a bit of physics and geography, a bit of biology and chemistry. Things like this.In fact, I really liked studying science, I found it exciting to gain an understanding how things worked, like why wheels move around, and how the water in a bathtub spins around in one direction as it goes down the plug hole, or why water boils at less than 100 degrees C when on top of a very high mountain! I love all these little scientific facts and learning the reasons behind why things do what they do! I think it’s also very good for children – it teaches them cause and effect logic as well, which is a useful mental skills that beused in other studies as well.

  (2) Do students still learn science when they are in high school?

Yes, sure, but in high school you can choose subjects so you choose usually one or two science subjects. I was never very good at maths so I chose biology only. But some students who want to go onto study science or science-related subjects choose two or three science subjects in high school. So, yes, students do still learn science but they have a certain element of choice as to which subjects to choose to continue to study at high school level.

加分词汇:have a certain element ofchoice 有一定的选择权 as to至于,关于

(3)Is there any technology that you think is helpful in daily life?

Sure, computers, smartphones… these are the main types of technology that are most widely used today. In fact, they are indispensable – we couldn’t live our daily lives or work without them. They are not just ‘helpful’, but in many cases they are absolutely necessary to communicate and get work done, and even complete financial transactions and all sorts of stuff. So, there was a time, maybe over ten years ago now, when information technology helped us do things, yes, but now, this kind of technology is absolutely essential for us to get almost everything done!

  03

Describe an experience when you were a member of a teamYou should say:

When it was

What you were working with in the team

What you did in the team

And explain how you felt about the teamwork

I would like to talk about a time when I participated in a team project in history class. It was when I was in middle school. The teacher divided the class into several groups and set us the task of choosing an event, time or a period in history that we found interesting, then making a presentation about it. We had one week to prepare our presentations, in our free time outside class, and we were told to use pictures, images or any other visual aids or multimedia we wanted. My team consisted of me and three other girls. We chose the period of the Roman occupation of Britain, and we decided to talk about the time when the Romans were flourishing, when their societies in Britain were advanced, and their cities developed – at least for their time, the Roman civilization was the most advanced in the world. You see, the Romans were incredibly advanced for their time, in many ways. We talked about the Roman baths in the city of Bath, and the hot springs that the romans found there. I enjoyed working with the other team members and as a group we decided who would do what tasks to contribute. I was the best at art,so I drew pictures of the goddess of the hot springs and found facts, images and photos of the architectural design of the baths. My colleague, Liu Wei was really good at writing in an informative, engaging and amusing way, so he wrote the description of the building of the famous baths, and my other two colleagues did most of the research in the local library and online about the mythology surrounding the goddess and the hot springs. On the appointed day, we did the presentation in front of the class, and each took turns to talk about a different aspect of the roman baths. It was very well organised, informative and quite funny in places. I found it was a great success and the teacher was very happy with it, and the rest of the class seemed to find it entertaining. I also think that we learned about how to distribute the different tasks in a way that was fair and used each person’s personal talents and abilities to the maximum. We were also quite patient while preparing the presentation, even when we didn’t really agree upon certain things. So, I think these kind of projects are very useful for children to take part in, and an important part of education.

Describe a time when you completed a project with others

  Part 3 Questions:

Do you think it is important for children to have experience as part of a team?

Yes, I think it’s very important that children learn about teamwork and how to work with other people as a team –when we work in teams we learn the skills of cooperation, patience, listening to other ways of doing things and considering other people’s points of views and perspectives on how to do something. All of these skills are very important for their future life and getting along with others in society, as well as for working with others in adult life, in the working world.

What do you think is the most important quality to be a good team member?

A good team member is tolerant, patient, understanding of other people’s perspectives and opinions, but also able to clearly and honestly express their own opinions, with diplomacy when necessary.

Would disagreement bring heavy impact to a team?

Disagreement shouldn’t really be a bad thing if it is expressed and handled maturely. There are ways to express disagreement politely and it’s best that team members learn to talk to others without losing respect even when we disagree. Sometimes, we must also bear in mind that people get passionate and expressive and sometimes their emotions come out too strongly – we must also try to be patient and understanding when others lose their patience or temper and try to deal with it diplomatically and calmly. If we deal with disagreement in a positive and constructive manner, it shouldn’t be a bad thing.
