Can you get sunburnt even when it's cloudy?

Yes, you can! And here's why.

The bit of sunlight that causes damage to your skin is called ultraviolet radiation, or UV.

阳光中会对皮肤造成伤害的部分叫做 “紫外线(UV)辐射”。

It's measured on a scale from 1 to 11+, and it's usually strongest between late morning and early afternoon.

紫外线的强度被划分为从 1 到 11+ 的不同等级,通常上午晚些时候到下午早些时候之间的紫外线强度最高。

In places near the equator, UV levels can be high all year.

赤道附近地区的紫外线强度可能全年都很高。

Almost 90% of UV can pass through scattered clouds, so a grey day can still be risky.

We need UV for our body to make Vitamin D, which is important for the function of bones, blood cells and our immune system.

But too much UV could cause sunburn, skin ageing, and increase our risk of skin cancer.

In 2022, over 1.5 million people were diagnosed with skin cancer worldwide.

The World Health Organisation recommends taking extra precautions when UV levels are at 3 or above.

Tips include wearing protective clothing, using at least SPF 30 sunscreen and reapplying every two hours.

建议包括穿戴防护性的服装和使用防晒指数(SPF)在 30 及以上的防晒霜,并每隔两个小时重新涂抹一次防晒霜。

Try to avoid midday sun, use shades wisely, and don't forget sunglasses – UV rays can cause eye damage too.

尽量避开正午的阳光、合理使用遮光物并且不要忘了戴太阳镜——紫外线照射也会导致视力受损。
