Lynx could be first UK zoo-born cat freed into the wild

This lynx called Kitten is one very special cat.

这只名叫 “基滕” 的猞猁是一只非常特别的猫科动物。

Born in Newquay Zoo, until very recently, Kitten's life looked set to follow a similar path to that of her parents Kicsi and Onyx – behind bars, with food arriving via a low-tech delivery service.

基滕生于纽基动物园，直到最近，她的生活似乎会像她的父母奇可西和奥尼克斯一样，被豢养在笼中，所有的食物都通过低技术含量的配送服务提供。

But then word came from Europe that there was a shortage of female lynx in a programme that reintroduces the cats into the wild.

So this week, a not entirely delighted Kitten was boxed up and loaded onto a truck.

This is where it's hoped Kitten will end up – the Black Forest in southwestern Germany, where there's already a small population of wild lynx.

After a journey of more than 800 miles, Kitten emerged into a special enclosure near the forest, where she will be closely monitored.

"Everyone expects this lynx to be able to hunt and kill the food it needs to survive in the wild. That comes naturally to cats. The big question is, after spending all of its life up to now, looking at people through bars, whether it can learn to be scared of humans to avoid them."

Watching on at Newquay as the lynx strode out, Tracey, her keeper.

"I didn't think I'd get emotional. But yeah, just seeing her take that step out, this is a dream. This is the real conservation work that we want to be able to do."

If all goes according to plan, Kitten will become the first British cat to go from a zoo to living in the wild.
