　　There is no denying the fact that it has long been a controversial topic whether the development of economy and preservation of environment can coexist. There is the pessimistic view that man has to make a choice between the two.In other words, they cannot coexist. Personally, I tend to hold the opposite view. Though it is a difficult task, we can manage to achieve prosperity of economy and a desirable environment at the same time.

　　Admittedly, both history and reality point to the fact that the development of economy is usually accompanied by the destruction of environment. This is true both at home and abroad. In China, people are perplexed by the consequences of industrial pollution while enjoying the fruits of fast expanding economy. Actually, the contamination of water, soil and air has become so severe in this country that it has gravely endangered people’s health and lives. The same bitterness has also been tasted by such developed nations as the UK and the US, though situations in these countries have been considerably improved with the transferring of polluting industries to underdeveloped countries or regions.

　　However, I still hold the belief that man can manage to achieve a balance between increasing material wealth and enjoying a healthy environment. Actually, relevant technology and facilities have already been in existence to reduce and even eliminate pollution. The crux of the present problem lies in the fact that they are not adequately adopted and utilized. The major reasons are apparent. Firstly, in order to attain the maximum of profits, enterprises make a point of reducing costs, therefore refusing to purchase or operate waste-treating equipments. Secondly, local governments, in order to ensure their revenue or leave a satisfying record of achievements, turn a blind eye to the misdeeds of those polluting enterprises. Last but not least, relevant laws and regulations are not stern enough, unable to curb illegal producers from damaging the environment.

　　Bringing what has been discussed into a conclusion, we may safely say that it IS possible to ensure the development of economy and enjoy an agreeable environment at the same time. The only thing to do is to curb the desire: the desire for endless wealth, especially within a short term, and the desire for fame. Undeniably, the preservation of environment may slow down the development of economy, but it does not mean the halting of it.
