Shandong university lowers enrolment score for talented paper-folding student

Sun Hongtao, a student from Shandong Experimental High School, was admitted in Weihai campus of Harbin Institute of Technology, one of the leading universities in China. Sun Hongtao’s enrolment score was lowered by 60 points because of his outstanding skills in paper-folding, iqilu.com reported on July 11.
据齐鲁网7月11日新闻报道，来自山东实验中学的学生孙洪涛被哈工大(威海)录取，因为在折纸方面的优秀技能，他被破格降低60分录取。
Sun explained that his craft is made from a mere square sheet of paper without pasting or clipping. It takes about 20 hours to complete a piece of work from sketch, design and folding.
据孙洪涛解释称，他的折纸作品仅仅是用一张方形纸折成，没有经过粘贴和裁剪。从草图、设计到折叠，完成一件作品往往需要耗20多个小时。
The student added that paper-folding, which is seemingly simple, involves complicated mathematical and special structural principles that resemble those of machine design, manufacture and automation, the course he has chosen as major.
孙洪涛还表示称，折纸看似简单，却包含复杂的数学和特殊结构学原理，跟机械设计、以及制造和自动化类似，而他也选择了主修这一专业。
Although paper-folding is complicated and time-consuming, Sun enjoys it. In order to create live-size paper-folding, Sun has read much English material on the skill, thereby significantly improving his knowledge of geometry and mathematics.
虽然折纸复杂且费时间，但孙洪涛却颇为乐在其中。为了折出真人大小的折纸作品，孙洪涛阅读了大量相关的英文材料，从而大大提高了自己的几何学和数学知识。
