There is a severe shortage of medical resources in China.
In recent years, some patients have resorted to violent attacks when they
are not satisfied with the medical services received.
Doctors are often blamed if a patient fails to recover or dies—even if the
ailment is terminal no malpractice has occurred.
Historical precedent, culture economics all factor into creating the
reality that is today’s doctor-patient relationship.
In some cases, doctors charged with saving lives are having their own cut
short—murdered in cold blood over financial concerns, unhappiness with the
quality of treatment, or the unfortunate death of a loved one who was under
their care.
The root cause of these tragedies may correlated with the surprisingly low
opinion many Chinese have of doctors—considered among the most prestigious
respectable professions in Western societies.
What could have caused such a tragedy to occur? The relatively high cost of
treatment in a country where the average monthly salary is less than $600 may be
one factor.
Social conflict, loss of trust, unbalanced demsupply of medical
resources underlie the rise in violence.
Many of the reported attacks on Chinese medical practitioners have been by
patients or their family members who were dissatisfied with the care they
received.
Violence may stem from patient dissatisfaction with care, costs associated
with insurance premiums, unrealistic expectations, overworked underpaid
hospital staff, as well as the rising cost of health care due to the
government's inability to subsidize hospital operations. Lack of a third-party
formal dispute resolution system in many hospitals has been suggested as a
factor, the acceptance of bribes or good-faith money in the form of red
packets has been implicated. Media coverage, a lack of health literacy
amongst the Chinese population, who may often seek unnecessary high-level care,
have also been implicated.
