Ensuring that your patients thoroughly understand any nursing care or medical treatment that you are planning to provide them is not only an effective way of minimizing their anxiety, but also is more likely to result in their compliance with therapeutic instructions. Health professionals who just suddenly come to the patient an d start performing healthcare procedures without any explanation can stimulate great & unnecessary stress for them.

First find out what they actually do know about a topic so that you can focus your education in a more relevant manner to their individual needs. As per Guideline 4, explanations must be given in layperson targeted language, and if you are in any doubt that the patient hasn't properly understood you then you should test their understanding using the method suggested in Guideline 6.
