Flood control “masterpiece”
Germany’s Spundwand fence, a so-called “masterpiece” of flood control, has gone viral among Chinese internet users. The Spundwand is a flood prevention dam with a foundation that goes as deep as 20 meters underground. But more reports have revealed that the 15-centimeter-thick fence is not infallible: It was found to have permitted some water leakage even after it was erected. Sandbags, which are considered old-fashioned by many, are also widely used in Western countries.
德国的Spundwand防洪挡板走红中国网络，被网友们誉为“防洪神器”。Spundwand厚度达15厘米，地基深入地下20米，不过也有报道称“防洪神器”并非万无一失：挡板立起来后可能会有渗水现象。而很多人认为已经过时的防洪装备——沙袋，至今仍被许多西方国家广泛使用。
Masterpiece意为“杰作”，在此意译为“神器”。但所谓的“神器”其实也并不是“万无一失的”(infallible)。
