Hong Shu is professor of Geoinformatics in National Laboratory for Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS) at Wuhan University, P.R. China. He received his education of Bachelor, Postgraduate, and Philosophical Doctor in the mathematics department of Central China Normal University, the computer department of Wuhan University, the department of photogrammetry and remote sensing of LIESMARS respectively. Over the years, he has worked subsequently in Hongkong Polytechnic University, Laval University in Canada, German National Research Center for Information Technology, and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne, the National Weather Center and the Center for Spatial Analysis at the University of Oklahoma in USA. In the early 1990s, he initiatively developed the technology of temporal geographical information systems, ranging from spatio-temporal georeference, change detection and spatial database update, spatiotemporal data models and spatiotemporal indexes, spatiotemporal query language and spatiotemporal cartography, multitemporal image processing, motion recognition and path programming, data assimilation and environmental changes remote sensing. Since 1998, from a perspective of human-computer-environment interaction, his research has been focused on spatio-temporal geographical computation, mainly including spatio-temporal geostatistics, computational geometry and topology, spatio-temporal scale analysis, dynamics and deformation modeling, and space-time common sense reasoning. He is principal investigator of several major research projects supported by the National High-Tech Research and Development Program of China and National Natural Science Foundation of China, and an author of approximately 60 scientific papers on temporal geographical information and analysis.
